WAYLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – Kristie LeValley, a resident of Wayland expressed her delight and astonishment at the huge payouts being offered by Gun Lake casino. Although, she has not gambled so far at the casino but she is happy for the good deeds done by the casino. She added that she can play five games with her two children for just $300, thus saving a lot of money. Also the home sporting events organized at Wayland Union Schools are free for school district citizens. A sports pass for a family will save $155/year. They can participate free of cost in the games by putting up white and green colored school uniform at Wayland schools or by possession of a pass. The citizens can get these passes from Wayland school offices, Wayland City Hall or in some regions businesses. However, the games or tournaments supported by MHSAA are excluded from this facility.
A large amount of money is being supplied by the casino to Wayland Union Schools due to which LeValley’s family can save $500/year. All the children from 7th standard to 12th standard are granted free of cost iPads for school. Also, the young students are supplied free refreshments regularly. Pencils, scissors and other stationery required by students are also made available without any payment. All the things required by students during full session are provided to them on the first day of the school, as stated by Lynn Donaldson - a first grade teacher at Wayland.
Started in Feb. 2011, the Gun Lake Casino is at the center of a national court case till date. The casino paid to the state and local governments 10% of the profits earned by its slot machines amounting to $15 million during last year. The state got 8% i.e. $12 million, while other payments made by the casino were $700,000 to Wayland Township; $240,000 for Allegan Area Educational Service, $1.4 million to Wayland-Union schools and $500,000 to Allegan County. An amount of $25,000 was supplied to each of the surrounding communities as well.
Roger VanVolkinburg, the overseer of Wayland Township expressed his astonishment over the large amount of money received by the town from casino. This has led to a twofold rise in the financial plan of Wayland Township. Also the more talked about rise in the property taxes by the government has been stopped due to this money. He also cited a freshly reconstructed road that extends 4 mile of 126th Avenue till Gun Lake that has been made possible due to money supplied by the casino. The casino provided $250,000 as contribution of township in reconstruction of the road. Two Allegan County deputies are also being paid to beat the road 12 hours/day all through the week by the township from that money, as stated by VanVolkinburg.
