One hundred fifty people held in raids on casinos in Macau

In view of the increased criminal acts leading to violence and murders in the former Portuguese colony, the Macau police conducted raids on the hotels & casinos and detained one hundred fifty people during the weekend. The Chinese police party was accompanied by the Hong Kong police personnel also who termed the arrests as yearly routine exercise to curtail the criminal activities in southern China.
World’s biggest gambling market, the Chinese territory has become a shelter house for the criminals since long. These untoward incidents took the lives of three Chinese people, one of them having been murdered at a five-star hotel. The recent killings are not identical with the notorious acts that prevailed and defamed Macau in the 1990s, said the former head of the police in Hong Kong’s criminal intelligence bureau, Steve Vickers. He added that now the situation is quite different and there is more pressure & problems for the low level junket operators. Vickers continued to say that the raids were conducted to check the money-laundering also that have become a common practice among the Hong Kong residents in Macau. In June, attention to the criminal scenario of Macau was drawn to the attack on the high profile businessman, Ng Mansun, the biggest shareholder of Amax Holdings and his female partner. The old resident & publisher of various local magazines in Macau, Paolo Azevedo said that these incidents are not gang wars and the conditions do not resemble with the ones of 1990s when wars between the triads and within the triads were common. An analyst with CLSA, Aaron Fischer appreciated the police for its combating operations to check the crimes. He said that they did not observe any bad effect upon the gaming revenues of the city due to such incidents. The revenues generated through gaming activities in Macau have gone up by 1.5% in July after a record double-digit upward trend in the previous few years. The change has been due to the downward trend in the credit position and also the slowdown in China, say the analysts.
