SAN JOSE- Chris Moore, Police Chief gave green signal to the commencement of operations at Casino M8trix that has been constructed recently and was expected to get started four months ago. The owners of the casino have heaved a sigh of relief who had bought M8trix as a transfer and re-branding of the Garden City card room from previous owners’ state of liquidation. The authorization given by police chief is restricted because casino is ought to fulfill some requirements laid down by the gaming administrator of the city in a report such as illustrating appropriate internal controls and supervision systems. Passing through these conditions will allow the casino to start operations as stated by Moore.
The consultant of M8trix, Sean Kali Rai expressed his delight and excitement over opening of the casino most probably during the end of next week after fulfillment of authorization conditions and organization of the changeover. The card owners will take some time to shift the operations of casino from Garden City located on Saratoga Avenue since 1976 to the new M8trix casino on Airport Parkway, although they possess the allowance in their hand. The consent from the state to shift the liquor license must be received by the card room and the additional staff employed by them to work at larger card room must be put together to work. Kali-Rai stated that the owners will speed up the things.
One of the main issues of the permit- gambling on the top floor of the 8-faceted building of the casino is permissible or not, still remains vague. Police is doubtful about the capability of the casino to keep an eye on the activities going on in the top floor gaming rooms, despite the fact that these rooms will be under examination and released for the public. Moore is looking forward to an extra report on top floor gambling in coming two months. He is hopeful about gambling on top floor but at present he wants the ground floor gambling operations to get started so that something may be earned from it.
Bay 101 card room that is a relocation of Sutter’s Place casino in Alviso opened in 1944 off Brokaw Road across Highway 101 from M8trix’s location and publicized itself as San Jose’s place to play. It is now contradicting top floor gambling at M8trix casino which is giving hard competition it by commercializing itself on radio as new place to play.
The law of the state permits poker and other games in the card rooms in the city from generations in which players play against one another instead of the casino, similar to a Las Vegas Casino. These types of card rooms are considered as cash cows because they produce around $15million per annum for the city in the form of tax and have been in a rich and intricate relationship with City Hall. Apart from this, these are also a source of crime and corruption. In the year 2000, more than 10 card rooms were prosecuted for their indulgence in looting and loan corruption. The city has imposed the California’s hardest rules on the card rooms during all these years such as reducing the number of card rooms to be operated in the city to two and putting a ban on their involvement in political campaigns. The efforts made by the city to ban round-the-clock gaming and the protest over competition with the 94 other casinos of the state, Internet Poker, tribal casinos and temptation of Las Vegas were opposed by the card rooms.
To give a little glint of Las Vegas style casino to the poker players is a wish that Eric Swallow, Peter and Jeanine Lunardi, the new proprietors of Garden City want to come true. In May 2010, they got the undisputed permission for relocation of casino by City Council. The construction work of M8trix costing $50 million was accomplished in March. It also included imported mosaics, a traditional floral aroma, customizable LED lighting displays and 165-foot long tower that are expected to start additional gaming plus a city view from the top floor. Due to delay in producing the documents needed to assess the background checks, control and examination related issues, the police couldn’t grant them permit to start operations in April. However, due to the increased understanding between the police and owners of casino in the past month, the process could be paced up. The new employees of the M8trix were informed by e-mail on Friday to join their respective jobs. However, due to delay in opening of the casino, some of them joined somewhere else that has forced M8trix to employ new persons in their place. The 20 year old Jessica Carreras, who has been employed as waitress for the new card room expressed her happiness and excitement over her new job in San Jose.
