Montgomery- On Monday, 16th of July, Myron Thompson, the District Judge of U.S. announced Ronnie Gilley, the bingo developer, Jarrod Massey, his one-time lobbyist and Terry Spicer of Elba, the state representative to seven years, five years and again five years imprisonment respectively in a scandal of buying votes on gambling laws in the Alabama statehouse. Massey and Gilley are blamed to give millions as bribe to the Spicer to pass a gambling related law in their favor. Nine more persons were also inquired who were released later on. One more person still awaits punishment.
Requesting before Thompson for mercy, the three convicts put forward the good deeds done by them towards their society. The government has imposed a fine worth $200,000 for Gilley, $20,000 for Massey and $40,000 for Spicer. There could be even more charges that the three must pay to the government.
The punishment announced by the Judge left Deidra, Gilley’s wife in tears and the two teenaged sons of Massey awestruck and shameful. According to Gilley, the guilty request and the scary imprisonment will enable him to mend his ways. The punishment given to Spicer and other two convicts as per Thompson’s calculations in the context of central rules is less but more as per defense requirement. The three convicts were set free with the instructions to remain in link till Aug, 27 when they are ought to go to the prison.
Gilley, during his investigation by the judge informed him about loss of $17million invested by people into his 1,600-acre BamaJam Farms near Enterprise and risk to hundreds of employees. He is worried about the loss that will be faced by so many people. Similarly, Massey expressed regret for his unlawful act and worried about the economic and other problems that his family will have to suffer. Spicer informed the Judge that three of them are capable of doing good deeds for their society and admitted that he has ruined the repute of law and also ragged friendship between three of them.
The proprietor of the state’s chief casino, Milton McGregor, four previous and present state senators, the two well-known lobbyists of the state and two others are enthralled by the importune blame that came on the surface in an extensive central corruption investigation in which the three above mentioned and an ex-lobbyist Jennifer Pouncy is convicted. The punishment to be given to Pouncy will be announced on 29th Aug.
