WHITBY – A meeting was held at Whitby on Friday in its town hall and approx 4500 persons attended the same. The people expressed their views regarding establishment of a casino in the city and many persons favored the idea. Ken, a resident of Whitby said that the proposed casino would be much helpful for the economy and the facility would be a source of jobs for the unemployed. Whitby, Ajax and Pickering are the areas where lottery and gaming activities are being modernized by the Province. Ajax council has shown its interest for the proposal while Pickering has already opted for it. Bob Petrie, the chief administrative officer of Whitby was optimistic about the proposal of the casino and said that it would enable the Whitby community to receive a share of the revenues. The casino would also prove a boon for additional property taxes, employment and spin-off business, he said. If a casino in Whitby becomes a reality, the gaming activities at Ajax could even come to an end that started in 2006, with approx$31 million through non-taxable payments. Mr. Petrie said that the future of our community is certainly going to become secure through the additional revenues from the proposed casino that would place table games and slot machines. Size and location of the facility would be decided later.
Mayor Pat Perkins said that a request for proposal would be announced in early fall and the approval would be subject to local land use laws. He added that one of the probable operators has expressed their intention of having 400-series location, but that has to be decided yet. Perkins said that the taxpayers would be benefited greatly as the casino operator will invest through revenues, taxes, development charges and other fees. Such opportunity would allow the community to go ahead with many welfare projects.
