TORONTO — During a meeting of the Queen’s Park Committee on Thursday; city councilors, Mike Layton and Adam Vaughan expressed that expansion of casinos in the city would have an adverse effect upon the restaurant industry, bars and the horse racing too. Not only that, the casinos themselves could also disappear within 5-6 years. In fact, the operators are dreaming too high about casinos. They seem to have made too big assessments about the profits from the casinos, Vaughan said.
Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is the target, set by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) with an expectation of big revenues. Dwight Duncan, the Finance Minister has promised not to go ahead with the GTA casino in Toronto, in case it was objected by the city council. He said that there would not be any compulsion for any municipality to accept it, if it is opposed. Nothing would be imposed on the municipalities against their own resolutions. It is up to them to take an appropriate decision in the matter, Duncan said.
Vaughan and Layton emphasized for local referendums for expansion of casinos. Layton favored for taking the local communities into confidence about the casinos developments. He said that the government is bent upon collection of revenues at the cost of democracy.
However, McNaughton expressed that there seems to be wide favor for the bill that is evident from the support it gathered from Liberal MPPs’ votes in its favor. He was happy over the support by various political persons.
Proposals by private sectors for development of casinos were on the cards of OLG by December. However, it has been declared that nothing would be accepted which does not hold the approval of the local government.
