Nevada casinos want back taxes to go

During a public hearing last week in Carson City, State Department of Taxation has been urged upon by the Nevada casinos to waive the back sales taxes of approx $200 million on the gracious meals provided to the clientele and employees of casinos until legal aspects are resolved. A sales tax as of Feb 15 & 25% penalty plus 9% annual interest on all the unpaid taxes until July 31 was announced by the department earlier this year. The representative for the casinos and retail interests, Attorney Josh Hicks said that the issue of sales tax on complimentary means is pending since long. He added that the tax commission has since rejected the appeal for a refund of $21 million by Boyd Gaming. Same way, the refund request for $31 million by Caesars Entertainment has also not been acceded to by the commission. Hicks appealed to the department to postpone any decision before the Nevada Supreme Court gives its verdict. However, the department officials are adamant for pursuing the tax collection process. They said that they would go ahead with the sales tax and imposition of penalty. However, it is learnt that before doing so, appropriate regulations are a must. The matter would be discussed again during the meeting to be held on 25 June.
