In response to the queries by Sen. Jon Kyl, (R-Ariz.), Senate Majority Lead Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Illinois & New York about the legal status of online gaming, the Department of Justice came directly in favour of the states; giving them the powers for licensing and regulating intrastate online gambling.
The gamblers were delighted with the Christmas day gift on Friday with the DOJ’s reversion of its previous stand that prohibited online gambling in any manner through the Wire Act. Ronald Weich, the Assistant Attorney General clarified that anybody found engaged in online gaming / internet poker at the unauthorized / illegal places would be dealt with strictly.
The move of DOJ was appreciated greatly by the representatives of the gaming industry. Poker Players Alliance’s Executive Director, Mr. John Pappas welcomed the decision of DOJ and said that it was the need of the hour to undo the obsolete rules that created mess for all.
The law for online poker has been passed by the Nevada Gaming Commission, the first to implement the same. The gamblers from Nevada would be able to play against the other poker fans from Nevada whereas the online lottery tickets in New York can be obtained by that city’s players as per the law.
